Auto insurance rates should definitely go down once someone enters college. Insurance companies know that students drive less, and that they're already better drivers than 16-year-olds. Also, pretty much every insurance company there is offers a good student discount for students with a B average or better.

And coming from someone who's been robbed, get renters insurance! It's such a no brainer. It's usually $10 a month and if you get it with the same company you use for auto insurance they might give you a package deal. Plus, it'll cover expensive stuff like laptops and iPods anywhere (including libraries, frat parties, bars, buses, etc.)-- not just in a dorm room or apartment.
