JOBS: Unemployment falls, jobs added in most states

Depending where you live, March was a good month for finding work. USA Today reports: “Employers hired more workers in 38 states. A government survey of employer payrolls found only 12 states plus Washington, D.C. lost jobs last month, the fewest since October.”

HOUSING: Builders broke ground on more new homes in March

Is the housing market thawing out along with the weather? “Home construction rose 7.2 percent in March from February to a seasonally adjusted 549,000 units,” MSNBC reports. “Still, the building pace is far below the 1.2 million units a year that economists consider healthy.”

INVESTING: Gold tops $1,500 for first time

The still-shaky economy has driven gold prices to a new high, “shattering an important psychological barrier,” CNN reports. “The price of gold has tracked steadily higher in recent months, as a cavalcade of unsettling world events created uncertainty in global markets.”

CARS: BMW gambles sporty image on electric cars

Electric cars aren’t just for the thrifty. Soon they’ll be for the shifty too. Reports USA Today: “BMW, gambling its image as a high-performance brand, will put 700 of its 1 Series coupes on the streets this fall with an all-electric drive that it says will satisfy sports car fans and also use no petroleum.”

COMPUTERS: Tablet sales may hit $75 billion by 2015

The iPad was just the start. Experts predict new tablets from Motorola, Samsung, and Research in Motion will sell more than 150 million units within five years. “That would make tablets the third-largest consumer electronics category, behind only TVs and PCs,” CNN reports.

The CNN Money article cited in the link “COMPUTERS: Tablet sales may hit $75 billion by 2015″ was apparently written by a Mac/Apple aficionado. To say that the Motorola Xoom is one of “102 tablets – but no real iPad rivals yet” is pure hype straight out of Steve Jobs mouth. In reality, the Xoom is more than a match for the iPad 2. It’s faster, has a sharper display, a better feature set, and uses an open source OS, Android 3.0.
I’d like to see his iPad 2 side-by-side with my Xoom. In every case that I’ve run into someone with an iPad 2, they end up looking longingly at my Xoom. Fact.
