You know oil prices are high when a Saudi prince wants them to be lower. “Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal said he wants oil prices to drop so that the United States and Europe don’t accelerate efforts to wean themselves off his country’s supply,” CNN reports.
IMMIGRATION: Employers targeted in illegal worker crackdown
President Obama is cracking down on illegal immigrants by going after their employers. “In a break with Bush-era policies, the number of criminal cases against unauthorized immigrant workers has dropped sharply over the last two years,” The New York Times reports. Meanwhile, “long-running investigations of employers have culminated in indictments, convictions, exponentially increased fines and jail sentences.”
Here’s a shock: It’s legal for rental car companies to offer vehicles that have been recalled and not repaired. Now a Congressman wants to end that practice. “U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York said he will introduce a bill to stop car rental agencies from renting automobiles that are under recalls for problems that aren’t yet fixed,” MSNBC reports.
The March earthquake in Japan has hurt this country in a big way. “Factory shutdowns and ensuing problems with getting parts have slowed vehicle production, a move likely to drive up prices, increase unemployment and slow consumer spending,” USA Today reports. “Japan is having an impact across a swath of the economy, but is being felt most acutely on vulnerable Detroit automakers, whose business was just beginning to recover when the disaster hit March 11.”
