The Week in Review: Funny Money Stories

1. Sikorsky overcharged Army for Black Hawk part

Maybe the recession had something to do with it, but it’s been years since we’ve heard horror stories of the military spending: $50 on a hammer or $100 for a toilet seat. Well, here we go again. The Army paid “$2,393.41 for a plastic wiring box cover worth $181.70,” Bloomberg says. Overall, the Army overpaid $11.8 million for helicopter parts.

2. ‘Schweddy Balls’ is Ben & Jerry’s latest ice cream creation

If you don’t grasp the pun, you probably aren’t a Saturday Night Live fan. Regardless, the quirky ice cream company has debuted its latest flavor, with a distinctively unattractive name. ” It consists of vanilla ice cream, rum, fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls,” USA Today reports.

3. IRS crackdown: Tax cheat caught claiming 20 bogus kids

If you’re going to commit tax fraud, you want to do it without attracting attention. This isn’t the best method: “A Los Angeles woman pleaded guilty to filing tax deductions for at least 20 fictitious children – which she claimed were all born on the exact same day – in order to land a $300,000 refund,” CNN reports. She faces 18 years in prison – almost one year per made-up child.

4. More Americans prefer male bosses to female bosses, but the gap is narrowing

Apparently, U.S. workers are still sexist. Just not as sexist as they used to be. MSNBC reports on a new Gallup poll that finds “32 percent of Americans would prefer a male boss, while 22 percent would prefer a female boss.” The best news? “Nearly half have no preference.”

5. Carol Bartz exclusive: Yahoo “f—ed me over”

Usually, when CEOs get fired, the reasons are announced as, “differing management philosophies.” But when Yahoo’s CEO was dismissed this week, she told Fortune magazine, “These people f—ed me over.” That should look good on the resume.
