When you think about scholarship searches, a few of the major scholarship websites come to mind – but realize that it’s not the end of your quest. It’s only the beginning.
If I could tell you any one piece of advice when it comes to finding scholarships for college, it’s that you should never think there’s nowhere else to look. Let me give you a quick story from my journey that will help you understand….
My senior year in high school, I realized I needed to find scholarships. Like many college-bound kids, I created profiles on all the financial-aid websites so I could conduct the first part of my scholarship search.
But I had this unconventional idea. I decided to go to my local newspaper’s website and conduct a scholarship search by typing in different keywords like “money for college” or “local scholarship.” To my surprise, I found a few. But one in particular brought me to a new realization.
Not only did I find scholarships, but I won one that included $500 and a seven-day trip to Washington, D.C.
The best thing about the local scholarship is that I had very little competition – I live in a rural area, and all I had to do was give a speech and answer three questions from the judges.
It just proves that not everything important and profitable is found in a database. It never hurts to do an old-fashioned scholarship search.
