A Quick, Free Way to Watch All of the Olympics

In Can I Watch the Olympics Online for Free, we explained the official way to get your fix of the world’s best athletes, and a workaround for those without cable. But we’ve found an even better way to watch everything, including all of the events that have already run. It’s easy…

Step 1

Visit Unblock-Us.com and sign up for the free trial. (It’s $4.99 a month after a week, but you won’t need it that long.) There’s nothing to download or install – just follow their instructions to set up your computer or Internet-linked device.

Step 2

Go to the BBC’s Olympics video page and watch whatever you want.

Here’s what’s happening: Unblock-Us makes your computer look like it’s having tea and biscuits. It puts a UK hat on a U.S. computer, so the BBC’s servers say, “OK, you look British, you can watch.”

Money Talks News tech genius Dan Schointuch figured out the method, and says he’s got it running great on his computer and Boxee. But, he adds, it should work on iPads, iPhones, and “almost any device with an Internet connection.”

Is it legal? An expert with the Electronic Frontier Foundation said there’s not much networks can do. He told NPR, “the only real way for them to enforce that restriction is technologically.” That is, “if they catch you, they cut you off.”

Comments & discussion

We welcome your opinions, but let’s keep it civil. Like many businesses, we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. In our case, that means those who communicate by name-calling, racism, using words designed to hurt others or generally acting like an uninformed bully. Also, comments that include links to email addresses or commercial websites typically aren't posted. This isn't a place to advertise your business.
