As [the victim] neared a pond, three boys about her age approached. One wore pink sneakers. A boy grabbed the iPhone, and the girl pulled it back, and the boy pulled harder. The brief tug of war ended with the boy winning. “I just kind of gave them a dirty look and they left,” the girl said this week, asking that her name be withheld from this article.
The boy immediately ran away and tried to sell it to someone, who decided to just snatch it out of his hands.
Apparently upset that all his hard thieving work was for nothing, he flagged a cop car and portrayed himself as the victim. The officer quickly located and caught the man.
Meanwhile, the girl was also reporting the theft, and an officer dialed her number to talk to the thief. When another cop answered the phone he had just recovered, they put two and two together. The victim proved it was her phone and identified the boy, and both thieves were arrested.
According to the article, iPhone theft is so common that crime would’ve been down last year otherwise: “If it weren’t for Apple picking, crime would have been down last year, when there were almost 16,000 thefts, accounting for 14 percent of all crimes.”
