Twinkies Returning to Shelves Next Month

Mark your calendars: Twinkies are back on July 15.

The companies that purchased the Hostess brand, Apollo Group Management and Metropoulos & Co., seem to plan on keeping the originals intact, CNN says.

They’ll come in boxes virtually unchanged from before the bankruptcy, except for one detail: a message that reads, “The sweetest comeback in the history of ever.”

The price will remain $3.99 for a box of 10.

Many other Hostess and Dolly Madison products will be returning at the same time, “including CupCakes, Donettes, Zingers, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, fruit pies and mini muffins,” CNN says. Other Hostess brands may take longer to reappear, including those purchased by other companies.

The original Hostess company was 82 years old when it filed to liquidate last November, following a strike by member of a union that represented roughly a third of the company’s 18,500 workers, CNN previously reported. The dispute was over a pay cut, reduced health benefits, and frozen pension plan payments — all part of a plan to get the company out of bankruptcy.

It wasn’t the first pay cut employees were asked to take. One worker interviewed by CNN had gone from a salary of $48,000 in 2005 to $34,000 in 2012 and was being asked to accept additional cuts to about $25,000.

Ultimately, most Hostess employees lost their jobs, and panicked Twinkie lovers were spending $60 for a box on eBay. The company’s buyers acquired five of the closed factories, and will employ 1,800 people.
