Super Bowl Ticket Prices Are Skyrocketing

By on

The best seats in the house at the next Super Bowl are likely to cost more than twice as much as those for the 2013 game.

Plans are to charge about $2,600 for club-level seats in the mezzanine with restaurant access, The Wall Street Journal reported after first hearing about the plan from anonymous NFL sources. This year, similar seats in New Orleans went for $1,250.

It’s not just the top tier that’s seeing a price hike. The next-best seating area will cost about 60 percent more than the previous year — $1,500 in East Rutherford, N.J., versus $950 in New Orleans. Plans are likely to be approved this week.

Why? “We are looking to close the gap between the face value of the ticket and the true value of a ticket to what has become the premier sports and entertainment event,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told the newspaper. In other words, the league saw how much scalpers were getting for them and raised the price accordingly.

On the bright side, the cheapest seats will be a little cheaper. The NFL plans to lower those seats to $500 from this year’s $600, the WSJ says. “In all, the executives say, about 39 percent of the roughly 77,500 seats would cost $1,000 or less,” it says.

Twice as many tickets will be raffled off, too — 1,000 versus 500 for the last championship game — but the NFL is tightening up its defense by making them nontransferable. The NFL claims that 60 percent of those tickets were immediately resold for the New Orleans game.

Super Bowl tickets were $325 in 2001 and $6 in 1967, the WSJ says. Do you think today’s prices are reasonable? Let us know on Facebook.

I think that what they charge for Super Bowl Tickets is just flat out ridiculous.
There is no way the best seat in the house can be worth THAT much…

It’s bad enough that the scalpers are ripping the fans off, why the stadium is ripping the fans off is something I just do not understand.

The four most important people in our world are doctors, policemen, firemen, and teachers. The highest paid making $200,000 a year and the lowest $30,000. Why does a football player need to make 10 million?
