Why You Should Eat Bugs, Goats and Other Weird Stuff

By on

Want to end world hunger? Start eating insects.

That’s the advice of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, which earlier this year released a report called “Edible insects: Future prospects for food and feed security.” The report covers everything from “the disgust factor” to “insect features, food safety and antimicrobial compounds.” Yummy.

Bugs are rich in protein, easily raised, feed on waste, and use far less resources than the livestock we consume now, says Business Insider. (People make them into protein bars, too.) The site flagged the report and also came up with other things we should be eating for various reasons, including these things:

  • Goat. This is the most widely eaten red meat in the world, with fewer calories and less fat than the meat Americans prefer. It tastes similar to deer, and is relatively cheap where it’s available.
  • Seaweed. It’s plentiful, colorful — there are red, yellow-brown, and green varieties — and a good source of vitamins and minerals. Also, it never had legs.
  • Lionfish. These fish are pests of the sea and have venomous dorsal fins. But they have moist, buttery meat similar to the hogfish served in restaurants, and scientists say it’s the best way to get rid of them.

If those suggestions are too outlandish, Business Insider also suggests fruit skins and beans. You can deal with those, right?
