If you get leg cramps and a neck ache just thinking about your next flight in coach, listen up.

A recent traveler survey by fare-comparison site Airfarewatchdog.com reveals which domestic airlines have the most comfortable economy seats.

“Apparently, even 1 or 2 inches makes all the difference,” said George Hobica, president and founder of Airfarewatchdog.

So, which airline should you book if you want to fly on the cheap and in comfort? JetBlue.

“JetBlue is famous for giving passengers more legroom than any other domestic airline in all economy class seats, so it’s no surprise that consumers recognize them as having the most comfortable seating,” Hobica said.

The Chicago Tribune said that while many airlines offer just 31 inches between seats (known as seat pitch), JetBlue offers a roomier 33 inches.

Asked which airline has the best coach seats, here are the four airlines capturing the most votes:

  • JetBlue Airways. 17 percent.
  • Alaska Airlines. 14 percent.
  • Hawaiian Airlines. 14 percent.
  • Frontier: 13 percent.

The Tribune said:

The rest of U.S. carriers garnered single-digit percentages in the poll. They were, in order of highest to lowest, Allegiant, Southwest, AirTran, Delta, United, Spirit, American and US Airways. Results were adjusted for airline size.

Hobica said he was surprised that Spirit Airlines, with a mere 28 inches of seat pitch, actually earned a favorable rating with about 3 percent of fliers. Typically the airline ranks even lower.

Hobica also noted that some airlines are implementing “slim-line” seating, which means less seat padding, allowing for more seats on the plane. The Tribune said the slim-line seats might not take away your legroom, but they’re not necessarily a comfortable seat.

And now, here’s a video we did last year on finding the best seats on the plane. Check it out, then read more about it here.
