Bill Gates is not only the richest man in the state of Washington. With an estimated net worth of $81.5 billion, Gates is also the richest man in the world.
Wealth-X, a Singapore-based firm that compiles data on the world’s ultra wealthy, recently released a list naming the richest person in each U.S. state. If you’re trying to pinpoint your state’s wealthiest resident, chances are you’re looking for a male entrepreneur with a net worth of at least $1 billion.
“Thirty-five out of the 50 individuals are entrepreneurs who built their own fortunes, demonstrating the importance of hard work and entrepreneurship in achieving the ‘American Dream,’” Wealth-X said.
Of course, not everyone made their own wealth. “People like Micky Arison, who inherited Carnival cruises from his father, and Forrest Mars Jr., the heir to the Mars candy throne, got a boost from their families before growing their fortune on their own,” noted CNN Money.
The list is also dominated by men. Just six women made the list, including Walmart heiress Christy Walton, Arkansas’ richest person.
“Of the 50 individuals, 41 are billionaires and their combined wealth of $594.1 billion accounts for 26 percent of the total billionaire wealth in America,” CNBC said.
The nine states that don’t have a resident billionaire are: Utah, New Mexico, Mississippi, Maine, Delaware, Hawaii, South Dakota, Alaska and Wyoming.
