New research indicates two ounces of chocolate per week can reduce men's risk of a stroke.
While tons of advertising dollars go into marketing chocolate to women, a newly released study suggests it has health benefits for men – if eaten in moderation.
The 10-year study involved more than 37,000 Swedish men between 49 and 75 years old and was published in the academic journal Neurology. The conclusion: “Those who ate the most chocolate had a 17 percent lower risk of stroke than those who never ate chocolate.”
Participants with the lowest heart risk claimed to eat the equivalent of “one-third of a cup of [milk] chocolate chips, or a little more than two ounces” per week.
Researchers caution that they aren’t making recommendations based on the study, which only asked the participants to self-report the amount they ate at the start – 10 years ago. But the results fit with previous research, including studies on women. And the study did account for everything else in participants’ diets too.
