Planting on the east and west sides however, help to keep your house from heating up as early in the day and cast shade in the evening so your house cools off sooner in the evening. You hit it right on when you said to avoid evergreens. In the winter you want as much light and heat to get through as possible. However if you live in a very windy area evergreens especially those that work as mid to tall hedges or trees work well to cut down wind and wind chill.
