Scammers imitating Travelocity are sending out letters promising free flights and other goodies, Consumerist says.
The letters offer “2 round-trip airline tickets on Southwest, Jet Blue, United, or a comparable airline,” plus a two-night hotel stay. And if you call within 28 hours, a $50 gift card!
Another variation, printed on postcards, throws in the gift card and offers a better call-now deal: a three-day car rental and $100 restaurant gift certificate. Both versions boldly lead with the Travelocity logo, but the postcards have fine print that says, “This promotion not sponsored by Marriott, Hilton, Travelocity.”
The details of the scam are identical to a fake offer purporting to be from Southwest Airlines that began circulating at least two years ago.
Travelocity is aware of the scams and told Consumerist it’s pursuing legal action. The company says it isn’t running any such promotions and you should throw those offers out if you receive any.
But here’s a better idea: Report them. You can submit complaints to the Federal Trade Commission online and to your state attorney general. Fake contests and prizes are one of the top consumer complaints the government gets every year.
