First 9to5Mac reported that Apple will release a new version of the iPhone 5s for customers seeking an iPhone with a smaller screen than the current iPhone generation offers.

Then this weekend, a photo of a purported smaller model, next to a standard iPhone 5 for scale, was leaked.

As 9to5Mac, a news site devoted to Apple products, describes it:

The image appears to show what could be the updated smaller iPhone with rounded edges and Touch ID … The source where the image was first shared, on One More Thing forums, has credibility with surfacing leaked hardware … The launch name will likely be the “iPhone 5se.” The “se” suffix has been described in two ways by Apple employees: as a “special edition” variation of the vintage 4-inch iPhone screen size and as an “enhanced” version of the iPhone 5s.

Other features that 9to5Mac believes the new little iPhone will have include:

  • The chamfered, shiny edges have been replaced with curved glass like on the iPhone 6 and 6s lines
  • The same 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.2 megapixel front camera systems as the iPhone 6
  • Support for larger panoramas and autofocus for video recording
  • The same silver, space gray, gold and rose gold color options as the 6s line

The current generation of iPhone comes with a display measuring 4.7 inches (iPhone 6s) or 5.5 inches (iPhone 6s Plus), according to Apple’s website.

The iPhone 5, however, has a 4-inch display. It’s also the last 4-inch iPhone on the market — and therein might lie its appeal, CNN Money reports:

Releasing a smaller iPhone 5se makes a good deal of sense for Apple…

Though Apple doesn’t break out sales numbers for different versions of the iPhone, Wall Street analysts believe that there has been a large amount of staying power for the iPhone 5s because of its smaller size.
