Yesterday, LimeWire – the file sharing site that helped countless people download (steal) millions of online songs – announced it’s shutting down on Dec. 31. But that doesn’t mean there’s no more more free music to be had out there.
The site dead.net is giving away 30 Grateful Dead songs until Dec. 8. In their words:
The music of The Grateful Dead is meant to be shared and enjoyed by everyone. That’s why we created the 30 Days of Dead. We at Dead.net realize that it was sometimes a little tougher than it should have been for you to download the music (especially that first week – sorry!), so we thought it only right that we give everyone a second chance to get every minute of the music. It’s the kind thing to do.
Until the evening of December 8, 2010, we will keep this page and all of the links to the music live so that everyone has the chance to get and enjoy all of the songs. Just click on the song title to download the song.
And, believe it or not, that’s exactly what you can do – simply click on the song and download it. No joining the site, no providing your email address, nothing. Most of the songs are live versions, dating from the late ’60s to the early ’90s. I’m listening to Althea as I write this.
So there you are – something on the web that’s totally free – and exceedingly cool. Rock on.
