Deals and Steals: A Holiday Triple Play

For retailers, “autumn” is a short-lived season giving way to “holiday” and then “the rest of winter.” Products for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s start lining the shelves — but where are the deals?

Shopping in October is a bit like time travel: one minute you’re in the present, and the next you’re surrounded by products and decorations for three months’ worth of holidays. It can be hard to decide what to shop for and when the best deals will arrive.

Regardless of what month it feels like, Black Friday is still a ways off — Nov. 26 this year, for those keeping track — so it’s a bit early to camp out for deals. But Amazon.com doesn’t think it’s too early for deals on camping out: they’ve got tents, air mattresses, and outdoors kitchen and cooking gear up to 40 percent off this week.

For those thinking about the more immediate future, Sears.com is offering up to 30 percent off on Halloween costumes and decorations, along with free shipping for orders over $40. Try coupon code “S5OFF50BOO” for an extra 5 bucks off orders over $50.

And for parents with kids already breaking out their Christmas lists, you might take a look at the Toys ‘R’ Us “Bricktober” event. All their LEGO brand toys are on sale this week, and several popular sets are 30 percent off.

Sam’s Club is offering a special 15-week membership deal that’ll get you through all of the holidays — for only $15. If you’re not a member already, this is a great way to check out their savings. An annual membership is usually $40.

And for those who don’t care what day it is, here are a few other deals that caught our eye for this week:

  • If you’re looking for real kitchen cookware — maybe for that Thanksgiving Day feast you’re planning — Amazon.com has this pretty nice 10-piece stainless steel cookware set for only $114. That’s over 70 percent off the list price.
  • Staples.com has some cherry finish bookcases that look nice for the price. They’ve got two, three, and five shelf options for 50 percent off, and others on clearance.
  • Linens ‘N’ Things is having a “Bedding Boo-nanza” this week, offering 20 percent off on several bedding products through Tuesday, Oct. 5. We’re not sure what sheets have to do with Halloween — maybe a cheap ghost costume — but the deal’s sound. The coupon code is “beddingboo”.
  • Fender guitar strings are more than 66 percent off over at Musician’s Friend. Beats $10 a pack.

And as always, check out our deals page for up-to-the-minute bargains. Happy shopping.

The 10-piece Cuisinart cookware set you show is nice, but Walmart and Walmart.com both have a Farberware 10-piece Professional stainless steel set similar to the Cuisinart, but which has tempered glass lids which allow you to see the food you’re cooking without removing the lids, and they have silicone-cushioned handles that are oven safe to 400 degrees. The silicone-cushioned handles stay cooler to the touch, too. The other nice thing is the price: $99.97 on Walmart.com, although it says the price may vary from store to store.
