When the new fee kicks in this summer, rates will range from free to $100 depending on how and when you pay.

Frontier Airlines, taking a page from Spirit Airlines’ book, will begin charging for carry-on bags and for beverages like soda and coffee.

The change is coming on an unspecified date this summer, The Associated Press says. Spirit Airlines has been charging for carry-ons for a while, and Allegiant Air followed suit. (Surely it belongs among the most annoying fees Money Talks News founder Stacy Johnson discusses in the video below.)

At Frontier, you’ll be able to pay $25 in advance or $100 at the gate for a carry-on. However, booking your flight directly through the airline’s website waives the fee. It applies to larger carry-ons usually stored in overhead bins. The ones that slide under the seat will still be free.

An airline spokesperson said, “We don’t want to charge” the fee, but it’s doing so to discourage people from over-packing their carry-on bags. “It’s about Frontier’s most loyal customers making it very clear that finding overhead bin space has become increasingly difficult,” the spokesperson told AP.

Frontier will also charge $2 for soda, tea, coffee or juice. You’ll get the whole soda can instead of half of it in a plastic cup, and coffee gets free refills. Water is still, mercifully, free.
