Spring will be in the air on Sunday -- and free Italian ice will be in the store.

Spring will be in the air on Sunday — and free Italian ice will be in the store.

Rita’s Italian Ice stores will again celebrate the first day of spring, March 20, by giving away their namesake product.

That’s right: Free Italian ice, no strings attached. All you have to do is show up at a Rita’s between noon and 9 p.m. on Sunday. (The chain has locations in most of the lower 48 states.)

This Rita’s tradition started in 1992, and the company reports that it gave away almost 1 million cups of Italian ice last year.

The freebies are served up in Rita’s “limited-edition First Day of Spring cup,” according to the fine print. The size of this cup is unspecified, though, and we did not receive a response to an email asking a Rita’s spokesperson about it.

According to fun facts that Rita’s shared on the first day of spring last year, the company’s most popular Italian ice flavors include:

  • Mango
  • Cherry
  • Cotton Candy
  • Lemon
  • Swedish Fish

Yes, Swedish Fish — I can vouch for it.

For more chances to score freebies at Rita’s, check out the loyalty program, Rita’s Rewards. Members earn a free regular-size Italian ice, frozen custard or a Rita’s Gelati (a combination of Italian ice and frozen custard) on their eighth visit.

How will you ring in spring? Let us know in a comment below or on our Facebook page.
