The first day of spring is Sunday, March 20, and two establishments will offer freebies to celebrate.

Rita’s Italian Ice stores will again celebrate the first day of spring — as they do every year — by giving away their namesake product. But instead of limiting the freebie to a single day, Rita’s now extends it for a full week, March 20-27.

The gratis free treat comes in a 7-ounce limited-edition “first day of spring” cup.

The downside to this year’s offer? You now have to download the Rita’s app to take advantage of this freebie. And to make sure you qualify, your account needs to be active on March 20.

Once you have established your account, you will receive the freebie offer in the Rita’s app.

Rita’s has locations in more than 30 states.

Dairy Queen is also celebrating with freebies. The restaurant chain is offering a free small vanilla cone on the second day of spring — Monday, March 21 — which is also DQ Free Cone Day.

There are a few caveats. The deal is not available at Dairy Queens located inside malls, and delivery and mobile orders do not qualify. The offer also is good only as long as supplies last.

Dairy Queen has locations nationwide.
