Buying in bulk is a classic savings strategy, and probably a good idea if you have the space and know you can use what you buy.
But that doesn’t mean everything in a warehouse store is a great deal.
Other types of stores may have better buys, depending on the item, and you probably want to factor in any membership fee, driving distance, and the extra time it takes out of your schedule. Here are a few things that Kiplinger found tend to be cheaper in warehouse stores:
- Batteries — up to 70 percent cheaper.
- Cereal — up to half off on name brands.
- Laundry detergent — up to half off, but pass on the mega-jugs of bleach, which have a shelf life of only six months.
- Peanut butter — up to 30 percent cheaper, but make sure you can eat it all. The shelf life is about a year.
In general, buying fresh fruit and veggies isn’t practical here, Kiplinger says. Bulk paper towels and toilet paper also aren’t necessarily the exceptional value they seem to be. When on sale, grocery store prices tend to come out lower.
