America has the most beautiful national parks on the planet. This weekend is a great opportunity to check out one or more absolutely free.

If you’re not too busy frying in our nation’s latest heat wave this week-end, throw the dog and the kids in the car and head to the nearest national park – it’s free all weekend.

You can go to this search engine at Recreation.gov to see what national parks are closest to you, or learn about any and all of our beautiful parks.

And free makes it even more beautiful: All national forests, national parks, national wildlife refuges, and many areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management will offer free admission August 14-15, 2010. The only other free days this year will be on Public Lands Day (September 25) and Veterans Day (November 11).

The fee waiver does not include fees collected in advance or by contractors, such as fees charged for camping, reservations and, of course, concessions.

In a week that saw Disney and Universal Studios both raise the price of a single admission to an astounding $82, show your disdain for corporate greed and embrace something that makes theme parks pale in comparison: the magnificence of nature, preserved forever by the political foresight of our fellow citizens and carefully tended by our tax dollars.

Now that’s tax money well spent. Enjoy!
