If you or someone you know isn’t registered to vote, it’s easier than ever – as long as you know the deadline. That’s the point of National Voter Registration Day:
In 2008, 6 million Americans did not vote because they did not know how to register or they missed their state’s voter registration deadline, according to the US Census. In 2012, we want to make sure no American is left out.
On September 25, 2012, volunteers, celebrities and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated volunteer, technology and media efforts will create widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities – allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters or more who we could not reach otherwise.
State deadlines vary but almost all are 15-30 days before election day, Nov. 6. So this date gives everybody at least a week to hear about registration and do it. The website walks you through the whole process, whether you’re a brand new voter, changed your name or moved, or just aren’t sure about your registration status.
Just go to www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org. Provide your name, address and other personal details. It’ll fill out the form for you – then it’s up to you to print, sign and mail it. (Some states can register online.) It’ll email you a copy too, just in case you’re not near a printer now. You can also sign up for election reminder emails.
Once you’re registered, you should received further information on where and how to go vote from your local election commission. Canivote.org can also help you find instructions and your polling place, plus verify the information you have on file.
