Smartphones have become a part of our lives — maybe a little too much so, judging by a new study.

In a survey conducted by Harris Interactive, nearly one in 10 smartphone-using adults admitted to diverting attention to their phone while they were having sex. Among young adults the figure doubled, Fox News reported.

That may be the most shocking place for using a smartphone, but it’s not the only odd or inappropriate one people confessed to:

  • In a movie theater – 35 percent.
  • During a dinner date – 33 percent.
  • At a child’s or school function – 32 percent.
  • In a place of worship – 19 percent.
  • While in the shower — 12 percent.

There’s not much we can do to help if your lover catches you with the phone and smashes it. But we have advice in the video below for when you get it wet:

Of course, we don’t recommend showering with any kind of electronic device. The survey says nearly three-quarters of people keep their smartphones within 5 feet a majority of the time, but it’s an unnecessary risk for a device that costs hundreds of dollars to replace.

Another reason people may keep phones nearby is fear for their personal information and money. ZDNet says 65 percent worry their personal information could be stolen, and a third worry someone will use their social media profiles.

Of course, keeping it close doesn’t mean you have to fiddle with it constantly. Where do you think smartphone use is appropriate? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
