As of Friday, Mazda split ways with Ford after decades of partnership – and set up shop in Mexico.

NBC News reports Mazda is no longer making vehicles in the United States…

Sometime [on Aug. 24], the very last Mazda6 sedan will roll off the AutoAlliance International assembly line in Flat Rock, Michigan.  Mazda has been building cars at the facility in suburban Detroit for the last quarter century, having set up AAI as a joint venture with long-time partner Ford Motor Co.

Ford was done with the partnership, according to the report. The company will keep operating the plant for its own vehicles, but Mazda will now use a factory in Japan for the Mazda6 and open a new factory in Mexico for Mazda2 and Mazda3 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Toyota, Nissan and Honda “have announced significant expansion plans for North America in recent months.”
