[The U.S. Transportation Security Administration] will end a $5 million contract with OSI System’s Rapiscan unit for the software after Administrator John Pistole concluded the company couldn’t meet a congressional deadline to produce generic passenger images, agency officials said in interviews.
174 such scanners are still in operation for now. The TSA is going to swap some of them out with another model made by L-3 Communications Holdings, which do not use the backscatter technology that made many concerned about privacy and radiation. The rest may end up used at other government agencies.
