The [Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007] law did not “outlaw” the old bulbs. What it did was require that by 2014, common household lighting had to be at least 27 percent more efficient.
So the old inefficient ones are gradually being pulled from the shelves, though you’re fine to buy and use them as long as they’re there, and stock up if you want to. (That’s obviously going against the intent of the legislation, if you care.)
So what are your alternatives? We summed them up when we warned about the change in 2010 and 2011: There are LEDs, CFLs, and halogen lamps. (CFLs are the most popular.) If those names conjure mental images of blinking computer lights, sterile bluish-white glows, and dazzling front-porch flood lamps respectively, then it’s time to take another look at the latest technology – things have changed.
