Now you no longer need to go to the bank to deposit a check, or even drop it in the mail. You can make your deposits through your smart phone.

For nearly a year, USAA Bank, which has only one branch in San Antonio, has been offering a smart phone deposit app that allows you to use your phone to take a picture of both sides of a check, transmit the image to the bank, and receive credit for the deposit.

Earlier this month, JPMorgan Chase added the feature to its iPhone app as well, and Bank of America is now testing a similar one.

How it works: if you’ve got a Chase account and an iPhone, you download the free app, sign in, and take a picture of the front and back of the check. Then you validate some final details and make the deposit.

The new Chase app also allows you to pay anyone through a Chase account simply by using the payee’s email account.

With the ability to make deposits and write e-checks, your phone is now a bank teller. The only thing left is to get it to dispense cash.
