The credit can be applied to a new phone purchased with a two-year wireless contract or with Walmart's prepaid plan.

Walmart will begin offering store credit toward new smartphones for trade-ins on Sept. 21.

More than 100 models will be accepted for somewhere between $50 (a Samsung Galaxy S2) and $300 (an iPhone 5) in credit, it says. The full list of phones and their values isn’t online yet, although ads for the program say it will appear at www.walmart.com/tradeineligibility.

To participate, bring the phone to a Walmart or Sam’s Club electronics department. An associate will ask questions about the device’s condition and specifications. The phone must be “in working condition without having a cracked or broken screen or housing or any sign of liquid damage.”

if accepted, the trade-in will generate an immediate credit toward a new phone. The same iPhone 5 model sells at Walmart for $98, and the latest Samsung Galaxy, S4, for $138 — with a two-year contract from a major carrier. The credit can also be applied to a phone purchased for Walmart’s $45-per-month prepaid plan.

Walmart is not the only game in town. It’s just one new option. “IPhone users looking to lock in a good trade for the upcoming new device can grab better deals elsewhere,” CNNMoney says. It got quotes of up to $336 from other buyers, and the highest was Apple itself. Check out the video below for advice on getting the most money for your old phone.
