This week: why you're not a millionaire, how to stay sharp as you age, how to make it as a writer, when couples disagree about how to spend money, and an alternative to health insurance.

1. Medi-Share Review: A Christian Health Insurance Alternative?

[Christian Personal Finance]  We covered this story, with a post and a video, in 2010: “Health Care Without Insurance – Medi-Share.” In this new post, we get the insight of a blogger who’s been using it since 2009.

The concept behind Medi-Share is simple: You chip in if I get sick, I’ll do the same for you. From the author of this post, Bob Lotich:

Each month all the members pay their “share” (a fixed amount depending on the plan you select) into an account with their name on it to Christian Credit Union. The funds in all of those accounts are what pay the member’s medical bills each month.

Bob says he pays about half of what he’d pay for typical health insurance, but also points out that only those who lead a “Christian lifestyle” need apply. That means no smoking or drinking.

Now that subsidized health insurance is here, I wonder if this will still present an attractive alternative to traditional health insurance. Check out the post and see what you think.

2. What Happens When Couples Disagree About How to Spend Their Money?

[Clever Dude] When it comes to money, unless it’s a major expense (think house or car) my wife and I rarely discuss it. We both work, she spends hers and I spend mine.

Not so with this writer and his wife. From this post, it appears they discuss pretty much everything. Check it out to see how a recent confrontation came about, how they settled it, and what they learned.

3. How I Make a Full-Time Living as a Freelance Writer and How You Can Too

[Dough Roller]  If you’ve ever had even the vaguest notion of writing for a living, this article is a must-read. It’s full of personal experiences and resources that will help you determine if writing is for you and, if it is, how to find work and how much you might expect to be paid.

While I’m by definition some form of professional writer, and employ many, I learned a lot from reading this thorough article. You will too.

4. Exercise Your Mind and Reduce Your Risk of Dementia With These 10 Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp

[Dumb Little Man] While I’m not ready to call myself a “senior,” I’m no spring chicken either. So if there are ways to keep my brain sharp, I’m down.

There’s nothing revolutionary here. Tips include things like getting enough sleep and exercise, eating well, staying active and continuing to learn new things. One thing I especially liked: There’s nothing wrong with a little caffeine. Check out the post to see if you’re on the right track.

5. 6 Reasons You’re Not a Millionaire

[Wise Bread] I really liked this post and agree with just about every word in it. The reasons you’re not a millionaire? You work for somebody else, you’re not trying hard enough, you don’t believe, you don’t trust your instincts, you’re just not there yet, and you have a bad relationship with money.

If you’re already a millionaire, or would like to be, take a minute to check out this article.
