25 New Cars That Will Cling to Their Resale Value

Thinking you might want to sell your car after paying off the lease? Picking the wrong car off the lot can lose you thousands of dollars.

According to the vehicle research group Kelley Blue Book (KBB), the average 2024 model-year vehicle — whether you buy or lease — will likely only retain about 42.4% of its MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) after five years.

KBB released its annual Best Resale Value Rewards for 2024, though, and the cars on their top 10 list are projected to retain at least 54% of their MSRP after five years. KBB didn’t consider low-volume vehicles for their awards aside from those in the electric, luxury and sports car categories.

While not all of the following are in the top 10, all are considered KBB’s best resale value within their vehicle category. Following is a look at which vehicles offer the most bang for your buck.

Compact cars

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Compact car: Honda Civic (53.8%)
  • Luxury compact car: Lexus IS (41.6%)

The Honda Civic won an award from Car and Driver as one of the 10 Best Cars for 2024. It runs off of a 158-hp engine (with available 180-hp engine) and a newly purchased vehicles comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty.

The Lexus IS has a 241-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Expert car review site Car and Driver notes the range of aesthetic options consumers can choose from.

Midsize cars

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Midsize car: Honda Accord (52.7%)
  • Luxury midsize car: Lexus ES (44.0%)

Car and Driver recognized the Honda Accord as one of 10 Best Cars in 2024. According to Honda’s website, the company has won more Car and Driver awards than any other brand with a total of 92 recognitions.

One of the Lexus ES’s least expensive models runs on a 203-hp in-line 4-cylinder engine. J.D. Power gave the 2024 vehicle a score of 82 out of a 100 and more specifically gave the quality and reliability a score of 85.

Full-size and sports cars

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Luxury full-size car: Lexus LS (40.3%)
  • Sports car: Chevrolet Corvette (59.0%)

The expert review site Edmunds gave this year’s Chevrolet Corvette a score of 8.5 out of 10. Reviewers noted its “impressive” power and acceleration.

The Lexus LS runs off a 416-hp twin-turbo V6 engine. It has a large, 12.3-inch information display.

Electric cars

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Electric car: Hyundai IONIQ 6 (37.3%)
  • Luxury electric car: Mercedes-EQ EQS (44.8%)

Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 received an 8.2 out of 10 from Edmunds for 2024. It got recognized in part for its comfort, acceleration and relatively quick charging speeds. Its basic model has an estimated all-electric range of 361 miles.

The Mercedes-EQ EQS has an EPA-estimated range of 305 miles and a 90.6 kWh battery capacity. It also received an 8.2 rating from Edmunds for 2024.

Hybrid/plug-in hybrid electric vehicles

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Hybrid electric/plug-in hybrid electric vehicle: Toyota Prius (55.3%)

The basic model of the Toyota Prius gets about 57 mpg and runs on a 194-hp engine. Its acceleration to 60 mph jumped from the previous year’s model, speeding up from 10.5 seconds to 7.1.

Subcompact SUVs

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Subcompact SUV: Subaru Crosstrek (52.6%)
  • Luxury subcompact SUV: Lexus UX (44.4%)

The Subaru Crosstrek base model gets about 34 mpg when driven on the highway and 27 mpg in city driving. It runs on a 152-hp engine. Experts describe it as a good daily driving vehicle.

This Lexus UX is the smallest that Lexus produces. It’s a hybrid vehicle running on a 181-hp hybrid powertrain.

Compact SUVs

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Compact SUV: Honda CR-V (52.8%)
  • Luxury compact SUV: Lexus NX (39.6%)

The cheapest Honda CR-V model runs on a 190-hp turbocharged engine. In addition to getting recognized by KBB, it was also recognized as one of Car and Driver’s 2024 10 Best Trucks and SUVs.

The Lexus NX’s cheapest model for the year has a 203-hp engine that accelerates from 0-60 in about 8.2 seconds. It comes with a plethora of driver-assist features and can boast a high-quality and “attractive cabin,” according to experts.

Midsize SUVs

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Midsize SUV: Hyundai Palisade (52.6%)
  • Luxury midsize SUV: Lexus RX (45.0%)

Hyundai’s Palisade runs on 291 hp and get about 26 mpg on the highway. It seats eight people. This model received a 9.5 out of 10 from Car and Driver.

The cheapest 2024 Lexus RX model runs on a 275-hp turbocharged engine. It gets 25 mpg, seats five people and earned a 7.8 out of 10 from Edmunds.

Full-size and off-road SUVs

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Full-size SUV: Toyota Sequoia (47.2%)
  • Luxury full-size SUV: Mercedes-Benz G-Class (61.2%)
  • Off-road SUV: Ford Bronco (66.7%)

The Toyota Sequoia gets 24 mpg on the highway and has a 437-hp “i-Force MAX” powertrain. With some limitations, a new purchase comes with roadside assistance and maintenance at no additional cost.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class runs on a 416-hp twin-turbo V8 engine and received an 8 out of 10 from Car and Driver. A rare special edition — with only 300 being sold globally — comes in rose gold and features 0.25-carat diamonds in the door lock pins.

Ford’s most affordable 2024 Bronco model produces 330 hp. Its two-door option seats four passengers and its four-door option seats five. Car and Driver gave it a 9.5 out of 10.

Electric SUVs

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Electric SUV: Rivian R1S (47.0%)
  • Luxury electric SUV: Cadillac Lyriq (40.3%)

Rivian’s R1S comes with an estimated 400 miles of range and 104 cubic feet of storage. It has a 0-60 mph acceleration time of less than 5 seconds and can even drive through 3 feet of water. It can seat up to seven people.

The Cadillac Lyriq has an EPA-estimated 314-mile range in rear-wheel drive and a 307-mile range when using all-wheel drive on a full charge. If you can only get in a 10-minute charge, it’ll have about 77 miles of range.

Compact and midsize pickup trucks

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Compact pickup truck: Ford Maverick (54.0%)
  • Midsize pickup truck: Toyota Tacoma (62.6%)

With the Ford Maverick’s competitive pricing and other favorable factors, KBB gives the vehicle a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It runs on 250 hp and gets between 21 and 26 mpg.

The Toyota Tacoma has a max horsepower of 326 hp and gets about 26 mpg on the highway. It also has a large 14-inch multimedia touchscreen. Its cheapest option comes with a 5-foot truck bed, which can be upgraded to 6 feet.

Full-size and electric pickup trucks

The best expected resale value for 2024 models in the category of:

  • Full-size pickup truck: Toyota Tundra (60.4%)
  • Electric truck: Ford F-150 Lightning (43.1%)

The Toyota Tundra gets about 22 mpg on the highway and operates on at least 358 hp depending on the model. KBB gave it a 4.1 out of 5 stars. Edmunds gives it a good rating as well at 8 out of 10.

The Ford F-150 Lightning seats up to six people and runs on about 452 hp. It has an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles. KBB rated it highly at 4.8 out of 5 stars, as did Car and Driver who gave it a 9 out of 10 rating.

Minivan

  • Minivan: Toyota Sienna (48.4%)

The Toyota Sienna gets up to 36 mpg and runs on 245 hp. It can seat seven or eight. It’s highly rated by KBB, Edmunds and Car and Driver.
