Telecommuting jobs are often a good fit for employees struggling to balance work and personal lives. But remote positions can also help the planet.

According to FlexJobs, a job search site specializing in flexible work offerings, telecommuting often has a positive impact on both the environment and a company’s bottom line. FlexJobs says:

In 2015, Xerox reported its teleworkers drove 92 million fewer miles, saving 4.6 million gallons of gas, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 41,000 metric tons, and saving the company over $10 million.

FlexJobs says that on an annual basis, U.S. workers who telecommute emit 3.6 million tons less of commuting-related greenhouse gasses each year than their cohorts who work in a traditional workplace setting.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, FlexJobs says these are the 10 best green jobs in America:

  1. Climate campaigner
  2. Natural lands manager
  3. Deputy regional forester – Eastern Region
  4. Summer research assistant – lake warming
  5. Climate engagement specialist
  6. Avian biologist
  7. Bronx green-up apprentice
  8. Environmental scientist
  9. Editor — plant and animal sciences
  10. Environmental educator

How you can help on Earth Day

You can help save the planet — and potentially save yourself some green — this Earth Day by adopting a greener lifestyle.

For example, one simple way you can reduce your carbon footprint is to shop with reusable bags, says Money Talks News contributor Jim Gold.

Reusable bags not only are better for the environment since they don’t end up in the landfill like their single-use, plastic counterparts, but they also can save you money. Many retailers, like Target, offer a discount for each reusable bag a customer uses.
