We all know that purchasing a car is no easy feat. But if you’ve been counting quarters saving up for a new vehicle, that sum of money needs to extend past the dealership lot because expenses don’t stop there.
The average annual cost of car insurance is nearly $2,000 a year — and that number can increase depending on your insurance provider, vehicle and location.
The good news is that it can also tick down.
Recently, Money.com went through data from various online insurance sources that highlighted vehicles as either particularly cheap or expensive to insure.
These cars are the most affordable to insure, according to their findings.
Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V has been on the market since 1997, making it one of the longest-standing compact SUV models. It’s also one of the most popular.
The Honda CR-V has a blind spot monitoring system and a cross-traffic system to alert you of any oncoming vehicles when backing up, as well as front and back-facing parking sensors.
Subaru Forester
Drivers can enjoy an all-wheel drive system meant to provide the best possible traction on snowy, wet or rough roads. If the system detects a wheel slip, it transfers power to the wheels that have better grip.
The Subaru Forester also features EyeSight driver assist technology, which scans the road for obstacles, vehicles or pedestrians and then activates automatic emergency steering or pre-collision braking if needed.
Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 won the 2023 Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and received a five out of five stars safety rating from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration.
This model features advanced braking support, day and night pedestrian detection and a Traffic Jam Assist system to reduce driver fatigue.
Ford Escape
This compact SUV has both gas engine and hybrid options. It can have more than 40 inches of legroom for front-seat passengers, and the second-row seats slide (giving passengers an extra 5.9 inches of legroom) and fold.
The Ford Escape has pre-collision braking, parking and steering assistance for tight spots, and a lane-keeping system.
