You can now shop Amazon and pay the online retailer with cold, hard cash.

This new feature, called “Amazon Cash,” enables folks to shop on Amazon’s website without needing a credit or debit card.

To start, you get an Amazon Cash barcode that is linked to your Amazon account. Amazon will send the barcode to your phone via text message, or you can print it out at home.

Then, you use the barcode to add cash to your Amazon account by visiting a brick-and-mortar store that participates in the program. You can add anywhere from $15 to $500 in a single Amazon Cash transaction, and the funds will be available immediately after the cashier hands you a transaction receipt.

As Amazon explains it:

“Amazon Cash lets you add cash to your Amazon Balance at thousands of participating convenience, grocery, and drug stores by purchasing and automatically claiming an Amazon.com Gift Card to your account. To use, visit a participating store, show the cashier your barcode to scan, and then pay the amount you want to add to your Amazon Balance. It’s simple, quick, and there are no fees.”

You then can spend that balance on millions of eligible products and digital content on Amazon’s site.

Currently, the following retailers participate in Amazon Cash, with Amazon noting that more retailers will be added to the list “soon”:

  • CVS
  • D&W Fresh Market
  • Family Fare Supermarkets
  • Kum & Go
  • Sheetz
  • Speedway
  • VG’s Grocery

How to score a $10 Amazon credit

Amazon is currently promoting the Amazon Cash feature by offering a $10 digital credit.

For a limited time, if you add at least $50 to your Amazon balance using Amazon Cash, a $10 digital credit will automatically be applied to your Amazon account.

You can spend the credit on eligible products in these digital categories:

  • Appstore
  • Kindle books
  • Digital video
  • Digital music
  • Digital software
  • Digital video games

The credit will automatically be applied at checkout when you purchase an eligible item. Just don’t wait too long to spend it — this $10 digital credit offer ends May 31, and the credit itself will expire on June 30.
