It’s a robot. … It’s a plane. … No, it’s both.
And you can book a seat on the Boeing 787 painted to resemble R2-D2, the iconic robot character from “Star Wars.”
Boeing and Japan’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA), recently unveiled the R2-D2 jet at Boeing’s wide-body assembly line facility in Everett, Washington, USA Today reports.
The first of three planned “Star Wars” character-themed jets will take to the skies starting next month.
According to ANA’s latest news release about the trio of aircraft, they’re part of a promotional agreement with The Walt Disney Co.:
Through this combination of characters, ANA hopes to welcome more passengers of all ages from around the world.
Disney now owns Lucasfilm, the movie company behind the “Star Wars” brand.
The “Star Wars” airplane trio will comprise:
- The R2-D2 ANA Jet, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
- The BB-8 ANA Jet, a Boeing 777-300ER that will bear the image of BB-8, a new character from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which is scheduled to be released in theaters in December.
- The “Star Wars” ANA Jet, a Boeing 767-300 that will bear the images of both R2-D2 and BB-8.
These aircraft will also feature interior decorations based on “Star Wars” characters, and in-flight entertainment will include viewings of all six of the currently released “Star Wars” films.
The “Star Wars” planes will fly international and domestic routes. The R2-D2 plane will go into service on Oct. 18, starting with a flight between Tokyo and Vancouver. ANA’s latest news release does not state how much flights on any of the “Star Wars” planes will cost.
