Memorial Day is still days out — falling on May 29 this year — but Memorial Day weekend savings are already under way at Ebates.com.

The website is offering twice as much cash back as usual — up to 40 percent — on purchases you make at certain retailers. That’s on top of any discounts from sales and any cash back you earn by using a rewards credit card.

As of Tuesday, retailers and other merchants participating in the promotion included:

  • Avenue: 7 percent
  • Dell: 8 percent
  • eBags: 12 percent
  • Finish Line: 6 percent
  • GoDaddy: 18 percent
  • Hanes: 6 percent
  • JCPenney: 6 percent
  • Kohl’s: 6 percent
  • LivingSocial: 6 percent
  • Macy’s: 6 percent
  • Magazines.com: 40 percent cash back
  • Oakley: 6 percent
  • Petco: 8 percent
  • PetSmart: 8 percent
  • Rosetta Stone: 12 percent cash back

About Ebates and similar sites

Ebates is a cash-back portal. That means when you do your online shopping through its website, you earn rebates in the form of cash — commonly called “cash back.”

To earn cash back, you only need to visit the Ebates site and select the retailer where you want to shop. From there, you are redirected to the retailer’s website. Alternatively, you can use Ebates’ browser extension or mobile app.

Like other cash-back portals, Ebates receives a commission from retailers for referring online shoppers to those retailers’ websites. Then, Ebates shares that commission with shoppers. So your cash back is your share of that commission.

I pocketed $101.56 in cash back through Ebates last year.

To get started with Ebates or any other cash-back portal, just sign up for an account. Signing up for and using portals is free.

Other cash-back portals include:

Even if you already have an Ebates account, you might want to check out other portals, as some portals sometimes offer more cash back than others at a given retailer. I now use both Ebates and TopCashback.
