Why not shoot for the best employer in your state?

The career website Zippia analyzed employer data from all 50 states to determine the best of the best. It assigned each company a “Zippia Score” based on such factors as pay and diversity as well as a company’s financial health. Zippia has shared its latest findings with Money Talks News.

While not every company may fit your occupation or skill set, take a moment to check out the best business to work for in your state.

Alabama — BBVA Compass

Zippia Score: 4.8 out of 5.0

Founded in Birmingham, BBVA Compass is one of the city’s best paying, most diverse and top performing companies. The banking firm employs more than 10,000 workers at 600 retail locations plus in its global operations.

BBVA Compass gets high marks from employees for a relaxed work environment and great benefits packages.

Alaska — Anchorage School District

Zippia Score: 4.8 out of 5.0

Staff members in the Anchorage School District are invited to make a difference in the lives of children enrolled in more than 130 schools and programs.

In exchange for their commitment to success, eligible workers are rewarded with a competitive benefits package, good pay and opportunities for career growth. That helps make ASD not only the top employer in Anchorage but also in the entire state of Alaska, according to Zippia.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better employer in Arizona than Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market.

Yes, this is a grocery store, but the company has more jobs available than simply stocking shelves. Sprouts needs managers, administrative staff and a distribution team. And stocking shelves or running the register is nothing to scoff at either, when your employer gives you a competitive wage and a grocery discount.

Arkansas — Walmart

The superstore chain’s roots are in Rogers, Arkansas, and its corporate careers cover 18 diverse fields, including legal, travel and engineering. Corporate employees are paid well and benefit from a diverse workforce at one of the best performing companies in the state, if not the country.

California — Chevron

With Silicon Valley and its many startups, there are plenty of California companies promising fun, vibrant workplaces. But the newcomers are no match for time-tested Chevron, an energy company incorporated in 1879.

Chevron gets a perfect score on Zippia’s scale, earning a 10 out of 10 for diversity and a 9.9 each for pay and performance.

Colorado — Great-West Financial

As a life and annuity insurance company, Great-West Financial has nearly 6,000 associates who enjoy perks including a casual dress code, paid volunteer time, flexible schedules and tuition reimbursement.

Workers at the Denver office even have a free fitness center and an on-site cafeteria and convenience store.

Zippia gives Great-West Financial an almost perfect score for diversity and a high score for performance.

Connecticut — Frontier Communications

Zippia says Frontier Communications is tops in Connecticut.

The cable giant needs workers in customer care, sales, engineering and in its corporate offices.

Frontier Communications scores high for salary and diversity (9.8 each) and a perfect 10 for performance. Employees say one of the best things about their jobs is having nice co-workers.

Delaware — AstraZeneca

One of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies is also the best place to work in Delaware.

AstraZeneca is a top science employer that needs workers for clinical development and medical affairs. It also hires employees to work in manufacturing, sales and multiple other business-related areas.

Zippia notes that the company has a reputation for generous benefits packages and great health coverage.

Florida — NextEra Energy

Founded in 1925, NextEra Energy has been powering Florida for nearly 100 years.

The company has evolved to become a leader in alternative energy sources such as solar power. Today, its workforce includes professionals working in power generation, power delivery and other fields.

Georgia — Southern Co.

Zippia isn’t the only organization to call out the Southern Co. as a great place to work. This energy company was named one of the top 50 companies for diversity by DiversityInc in 2018 and a top 10 employer by G.I. Jobs magazine in 2019.

Southern offers its workers a range of perks that include competitive medical and dental benefits, leave time and voluntary benefits. It also encourages a healthy work-life balance among employees.

Hawaii — The Queen’s Medical Center

As the largest private hospital in Hawaii, the Queen’s Medical Center dates to 1859, when Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV founded the hospital in Honolulu.

Today, the center is part of the Queen’s Health Systems, which rewards its employees with benefits such as 10 paid holidays each year, educational and professional improvement and tuition reimbursement. All that helps the Queen’s Medical Center earn the title of best company to work for in Hawaii, according to Zippia.

Idaho — Micron Technology

Micron Technology employs more than 34,000 people globally and prides itself on creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.

It supports six employee resource groups, including Micron Women’s Leadership Network, Micron Young Professionals, a Veteran Employee Resource Group and networks for black, Hispanic and LGBTQ team members. Zippia says Micron is a top-performing firm with good compensation.

Illinois — Baker McKenzie

What you might not realize is that the company is also the best place to work in Kentucky, according to Zippia.

Lexmark’s comprehensive benefits include unlimited vacation days, and many Lexmark employees can work from home or telecommute.

Employees at the Lexington campus have access to the Lexmark Center for Children for their children and grandchildren. Its curriculum centers on science, technology, engineering, arts and math for kids from 6 weeks of age through pre-kindergarten. The best company to work for in Michigan by Zippia’s measurements, Diplomat Pharmacy Inc. offers employees an array of benefits, including 120 hours of paid time off, a full on-site gym at the corporate office, work-at-home opportunities and a leadership training program. The company sponsors regular employee events like a family fun day and an annual company picnic.

Minnesota — TCF Bank

Mississippi — University of Mississippi Medical Center

Workers pursuing health care careers in Mississippi may want to set their sights on the University of Mississippi Medical Center. It’s the best company to work for in the state, according to Zippia.

The center employs more than 10,000 people, including in a range of careers “in every capacity one can imagine” including nursing, research and administrative support.

Missouri — Anheuser-Busch

Anheuser-Busch likes to say that its Budweiser brand is the king of beers. Zippia says the company itself deserves high praise as the best company to work for in Missouri.

The brewing company gets near perfect scores for salary, diversity and company performance. Anheuser-Busch is hiring for its team of employees, in sales, logistics, manufacturing and other areas.

Montana — Billings Clinic

Earning a perfect 10 out of 10 for salary, Billings Clinic is the top employer in all of Big Sky Country, Zippia says.

The community-owned health care organization offers employees medical, dental, pharmacy and vision coverage, among other benefits.

Paid time off, an employee assistance program and retirement plans are other perks.

Nebraska — Lindsay Corp.

Lindsay Corp. provides solutions and tools for irrigation, water management, infrastructure and transportation safety among global markets.

It would seem they are successful, since Zippia names the company the best place to work in Nebraska.

New York — Goldman Sachs

You don’t have to work in finance to have heard of Goldman Sachs.

The global investment firm was founded in 1869 and now has locations throughout the world in addition to its New York City headquarters.

Its commitment to employing workers from all backgrounds means it has hiring programs for those who have been away from the workforce for an extended period, military veterans and those identifying as neurodiverse.

North Carolina — Albemarle

If you want a job at the best company to work for in North Carolina, it may help to have a science or engineering background.

Albemarle is a global specialty chemicals company.

North Dakota — Altru Health System

Rhode Island — FM Global

If you want to work for the top company in Rhode Island, Zippia suggests you look to FM Global.

The insurance company only scores an 8.8 out of 10 for salary, but it earns a 9.6 and 9.8 for diversity and performance, respectively.

FM Global hires workers in a variety of fields such as engineering, IT, research and client service.

South Carolina — Milliken & Co.

Whether you’re an experienced professional or a recent college graduate, Milliken & Co. may have a job for you.

As a global manufacturer that specializes in chemicals, floor coverings and performance and protective textiles, the company hires scientists and engineers. But there are jobs, too, for administrative staff, lab technicians and other skills.

Overall, Zippia gives Milliken & Co. a 4.8 score out of a possible 5.

South Dakota — Raven Industries

Microsoft scores 4.9 out of 5.0 on the Zippia scale and gets a perfect 10 for performance.

West Virginia — D&W Homes

D&W Homes builds custom modular homes in southern Ohio and West Virginia. The company employs skilled craftspeople to construct quality homes that meet state building codes.

Overall, D&W Homes gets a 4.5 out of 5.0 from Zippia along with a 9.9 out of 10 for salary.

Wisconsin — Lands’ End

Lands’ End does business around the world, but its heart is in the Midwest.

From Zippia, Lands’ End earned a 9.9 out of 10 for both salary and performance.

Wyoming — Cloud Peak Energy

Coal producer Cloud Peak Energy is the best company to work for in Wyoming, according to Zippia.

The company gets scores of 9.3 and 9.8 for diversity and performance, respectively. Zippia gives a score of 8.7 for salaries.

Cloud Peak Energy employs approximately 1,200 workers and prides itself on its safety and environmental programs.
