13 Things You Can Get for Free in October

Halloween is right around the corner, but don’t worry. We have a slew of freebies available to children and adults alike this month that are no “trick,” but instead are all “treat.”

For example, they include free Medicare health insurance counseling and paper shredding services, as well as a variety of complimentary restaurant food.

Free 90-day trial of Amazon Music HD — for a limited time

If you are a music lover who is picky about sound quality, Amazon has an offer for you: a 90-day free trial of Amazon Music HD.

According to the retail giant, Amazon Music HD is “a new tier of premium quality music with more than 50 million songs in High Definition, and millions of songs in Ultra High Definition, the highest quality streaming audio available.” Amazon just launched this new tier of its Amazon Music subscription service in mid-September.

According to a company announcement about the launch, new subscribers to Amazon Music can receive a 90-day free trial. But if you already subscribe, you can get Amazon Music HD for free for 90 days.

Once the free trial is over, Amazon Music HD will cost $12.99 a month for Prime members and $14.99 a month for nonmembers.

Free Medicare counseling — ongoing

Medicare’s open enrollment period kicks off Oct. 15. If you are new to Medicare or find it confusing, you should know that free help is available.

Anyone eligible for Medicare — as well as their families and caregivers — can get gratis one-on-one insurance counseling and assistance via the State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs).

Freebies with your flu shot — ongoing

Keep yourself healthy and pick up a free coupon or gift card at the same time when you get an influenza vaccine at certain retailers. You can take advantage of these offers even if your flu shot is fully covered by your insurer.

Free pet exams — ongoing

Do you have a new pet, or are you looking for a new vet? If so, a couple of animal hospital chains are offering you a free initial visit.

PetSmart and Banfield Pet Hospital are offering new cat and dog clients a complimentary office visit and veterinary consultation. Fill out the “Free Office Visit and Consultation” form on the Banfield website and you will receive a coupon to present at the visit.

VCA Animal Hospital is also offering free pet health exams at its many locations across the country.

“It’s a risk-free way for you to see the care and special attention we give to each pet at our hospitals,” VCA says on its website, where you can fill out some basic information to receive a coupon.

Free tacos at various restaurants — Oct. 4

Oct. 4 is National Taco Day, and a lot of restaurants will be giving out taco bargains that day.

Now, we grant that most of these offers will not be “freebies” — but some will. For example, Rubio’s Coastal Grill has already announced that it will offer a free a la carte taco when you make a drink purchase. Note that you’ll need to access the coupon at the Rubio’s website to cash in on this deal.

Last year, the restaurant chains that offered freebies included Chronic Tacos Mexican Grill, Del Taco and Taco Bueno.

Free bratwurst at Wienerschnitzel — Oct. 4-6

Wienerschnitzel is offering its iconic sausages for free in honor of Oktoberfest. You can get a free bratwurst — either mustard and onion, or mustard and kraut — with any purchase on Oct. 4-6.

Visit Wienerschnitzel’s website for a coupon for the freebie or to search for a location near you. You might want to call ahead to confirm that a particular location is participating in the Oktoberfest offer.

Wienerschnitzel has locations primarily in California but also in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Free rewards at Target — starting Oct. 6

Target lovers, rejoice! The beloved retail chain is unveiling a new rewards program, called Target Circle, that will allow you to earn 1% back in rewards on every purchase, among other benefits.

Best of all, signing up for the program is free.

Free kids crafts projects at Michael’s — Oct. 26

Arts and crafts store chain Michael’s is offering two free crafts projects for kids on Oct. 26.

From 10 a.m. to noon, children age 3 and older can participate in a Spider Web Photo Frame project. From 1 to 3 p.m., kids can partake in a Monster Bash Slime project. Both are free, including the supplies.

Unleash your inner kid by snapping up a free comic as part of Halloween ComicFest.

As the event website describes it:

“Halloween ComicFest (HCF) is the comic book industry’s premiere fall event – a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away specially published comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops.”

You will find a list of all 28 comics that will be available for free this year, and can search for participating shops in your area, at the Halloween ComicFest website.

Free meals at various restaurants — Oct. 31

Last year, an array of chains — including Krispy Kreme, Freebirds World Burrito and Cheesecake Factory — served up free fare for all ages on Halloween.

Free IHOP for kids — through Nov. 3

Inspired by the new animated feature film “The Addams Family,” IHOP has kicked off a limited-time “spooky and kooky” Addams-inspired menu. The chain also is celebrating the season by bringing back its Kids Eat Free program.

Every day from 4 to 10 p.m. through Nov. 3, kids age 12 and younger get a free entree from the kids menu with the purchase of one adult entree. But you might want to call your local IHOP before heading out to confirm it’s among the locations that are participating in this offer.

Free shredding at Staples — through Nov. 9
