As the temperatures drop, the freebies heat up. You can find several great freebie deals in the first month of the new year. They include everything from free tax help to gratis pie throughout the year.

Following are six fabulous freebies that can warm the most frozen of hearts this January.

Free IRS tax help — throughout tax season

Beginning in January, the IRS Free File program will be available to taxpayers who qualify for no-cost help in preparing and filing their tax returns. The IRS partners with the Free File Alliance in offering this help.

As this story was being published, information for the 2018 program had not yet been released. But the IRS website states that taxpayers with incomes below $66,000 qualify for Free File software, including some free state return help.

If your income is above $66,000, you qualify for free fillable forms. Although these forms help you do the math, you must know how to do your own taxes, and state forms are not available.

Free appetizer, sundae and discounted entree at Spaghetti Warehouse — Jan. 3-4

If you sign up for the Warehouse eClub at the Spaghetti Warehouse Restaurant, you’ll get a free appetizer. Join the Mobile Text Club, and you’ll get a free Brownie Sundae Supreme.

The best time to cash in those offers is either Jan. 3 or Jan. 4. Spaghetti Warehouse is celebrating National Spaghetti Day (Jan. 4) with a $5 dinner of spaghetti and meatballs when you buy one at regular price. The dinner also comes with sourdough bread and choice of soup or salad. Just note that the offer is not available in Columbus, Ohio.

Free day at a national park — Jan. 15

In recent years, the National Park Service has granted free admission to parks on several days throughout the year. In 2018, the government is sharply curtailing the number of freebies to a mere four days. So, you’ll need to jump on the opportunities as they arise.

Admission will be free on Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The National Park Service comprises 417 places, most of which do not charge entrance fees at any time. The 118 that do charge admission will waive that cost on Jan. 15.

Free J.C. Penney photo session for your cat — through April

Ring in 2018 by celebrating your favorite feline with a free portrait. Purchase one Arm & Hammer or Feline Pine cat litter, and you can get a free photo session — valued at $24.98 — for your cat at J.C. Penney. You can share the photo with your cat, or add an additional cat, for $9.99 more. The offer is good through April 30.

Free pie at 3 restaurants — Mondays and Wednesdays throughout 2018

If you love pie, you’ll want to visit three restaurants this year.

Each Monday at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, you can get a free slice of pie between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. when you order an entree. It’s part of Perkins’ Pie Society Monday.

On Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to close, you can get a free slice of pie at Bakers Square Restaurant & Bakery or Village Inn.

And don’t forget that National Pie Day is Jan. 23. These restaurants and many more likely will offer pie deals on that day. Money Talks News will let you know more once the information becomes available.

Free museums — First weekend of each month throughout the year

Each year, Bank of America’s Museums on Us program offers debit card and credit card holders free access to more than 175 cultural institutions in 109 cities on the first weekend of each month.

This year’s first offering is the weekend of Jan. 6-7. To be eligible for the freebie, you must hold a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card.
