You Won’t Pay for This Schooling Before Landing a Good-Paying Job

A new career-focused training program aims to shake up the higher-education scene by offering to educate you at no cost until you land a good-paying job.

MissionU — billed as an alternative to the traditional undergraduate college experience — offers the training and education necessary to land a good-paying job in a high-demand field in just one year.

The school’s first program, which starts in the fall, is focused on data analytics and business intelligence, says CNN Money. MissionU plans to offer additional educational offerings in the future.

Although MissionU students don’t pay for tuition, the school does have a catch: Students who attend must agree to give up 15 percent of their monthly income –whatever their salary is — for three years after they secure a job that pays a minimum annual salary of $50,000. CNN Money explains:

At a minimum, a student will end up paying $22,500 total. That’s comparable to the average cost of one year at an in-state public college, including tuition and room and board.”

According to Inside Higher Ed, MissionU’s yearlong classes will mostly be online, although a three-day in-person residential kickoff is planned for each quarter.

MissionU founder Adam Braun tells CNN Money that “a bachelor’s degree is not one-size-fits-all.”

Braun, who says Mission U targets students ages 19 to 28, says the school’s aim is to prepare its students for the workforce without weighing them down in debt. Read more about how you can apply to MissionU at the school’s website.
