Just got this reader tip to share. If you’ve got expensive vaccinations in your future, whether for college or otherwise, check it out…
I wanted to share a tip/suggestion with you regarding college meningitis vaccinations.
As you may know, most colleges either require or encourage freshman students to get a meningitis vaccine. I learned the hard way last year that my insurance did not cover the cost of the vaccine for my 18-year-old daughter. Therefore, my out-of-pocket expense was $140 for the shot. Thankfully, they didn’t charge her a doctor’s visit fee – or it would have run around $200.
This year, my stepson also needed one, since he’s going to be a freshman in the fall. I called a local doctor’s office, and they said they would have to charge for the shot and an office visit. So basically, it was going to cost us an out-of-pocket $200 or so for the shot again. Graciously, the doctor’s office suggested that I try our county health department. We set up an appointment, there was no waiting, and the shot cost us $5.
You might want to remind your readers that the local health department is a place they might want to consider when it comes to vaccinations for their children and themselves.
