A tree planted on the south side of your house can provide shade in the summer. Don’t plant an evergreen, though: you want those leaves gone in the winter.

Actually planting on the south side is not as helpful as planting on the east and west sides. The reason is that in the summer months the sun is to high in the sky for the tree to cast shade on your roof. Planting on the east and west sides however, help to keep your house from heating up as early in the day and cast shade in the evening so your house cools off sooner in the evening. You hit it right on when you said to avoid evergreens. In the winter you want as much light and heat to get through as possible. However if you live in a very windy area evergreens especially those that work as mid to tall hedges or trees work well to cut down wind and wind chill.
