It seems the days of cutting a couple of holes in a white sheet and dressing up as a ghost for Halloween are long gone.

People are spending more on their Halloween costumes these days. Total Halloween spending in the U.S. will reach about $7.4 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation. About $2.8 billion of that will go toward costumes.

“There’s no question that the variety of adult, child and even pet costumes now available has driven the demand and popularity of Halloween among consumers of all ages,” NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said.

Even Fido gets to dress up. Americans are expected to spend $350 million on pet costumes.

But if you’re rich (really rich) and don’t want to show up at a Halloween party in the same costume as everyone else, you might want to check out the Million Dollar Morphsuit. It’s a skintight spandex suit “encrusted head to toe with 70,000 diamonds,” says CNN Money.

The costume is “a bit heavy” and can be hard to see out of given all the bling, said Gregor Lawson, co-founder of MorphCostumes. “It’s probably not the most comfortable of our offerings, but if you roll the head part down, you can still be covered 90 percent in diamonds.”

The diamond spandex suit, which is locked away in a London vault, comes with an astonishing $1.6 million price tag. Wow.

My family is dressing up in Lego-themed costumes this year. I’m making the majority of the four costumes, so I don’t think I’ll have to spend much more than $50 total.
