Most People Need a Change in Diet

Two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, but 8 in 10 believe they are “extremely healthy” or “very healthy.”

A new study suggests people aren’t as healthy as they think.

Research firm NPD Group surveyed over 1,900 people about their eating habits. And while 8 in 10 claimed to be “extremely healthy” or “very healthy,” only 2 in 10 have what’s considered a “most healthy” diet. Two-thirds are overweight or obese.

But they’re not totally clueless. Another recent NPD study found about half of U.S. adults “recognize the need to change their diet in order to improve the overall healthfulness of their lives.” But ask what needs to change, and the answer varies. Just 19 percent said they need to take something out of their diet, while 26 percent said they need to add something, and 55 percent recognized a need to do both to balance things.

The study also found fewer people who said they were on traditional diets (21 percent vs. 24 percent in 2004) and more people taking vitamin supplements.
