Few things are more frustrating than sitting on a crowded plane that’s been parked on the tarmac for two hours. But that long wait probably wouldn’t seem so bad if you ended up with $1,000 in your bank account as a result, courtesy of AirCare.
AirCare is a new, low-cost travel protection plan. For just $25 per airline trip, here’s what AirCare will compensate you, according to the company’s site:
- $1,000 if your luggage is lost or stolen.
- $1,000 if you end up sitting in a plane on the tarmac for more than two hours.
- $500 if you check your luggage and it’s delayed by more than 12 hours.
- $500 if you miss a connecting flight due to a flight delay.
- $50 if you experience a flight delay or more than two hours.
Customers can sign up and file claim forms online or with a smartphone app. But there is some fine print that you should take note of, Travel Weekly said.
The product must be purchased at least one hour before the originally scheduled departure time. And if a plane on the tarmac returns to let passengers off before two hours and one minute and then returns to the tarmac, the clock is reset and the two-hour waiting period begins anew.
AirCare founder John Noel said the travel protection package is sold directly to consumers now, but will eventually be sold through travel agents and travel industry suppliers, Travel Pulse said. It’s available only for domestic flights now, but Noel said he hopes to expand to international flights in the future.
It appears that this is a great time for AirCare to be launched. Travel Weekly said, “Already this year, some 30 million U.S. passengers have been affected by delayed or canceled flights, resulting in an estimated $2.5 billion in lost productivity and extra travel-related expense.”
