Questions before you decide

What should I compare besides the monthly price?

Compare coverage where you use your phone, device compatibility, data and hotspot rules, taxes and fees, and what happens after any promotion ends. A lower advertised price does not help if the phone will not work or coverage is poor where you need it.

Will a coverage map tell me exactly how service will work?

No. Coverage maps are estimates. Terrain, buildings, device compatibility, network congestion, and local conditions can affect service. Check the provider’s map for your address and use its return or trial terms as appropriate before making a permanent switch.

Can I keep my current phone number?

Often, but confirm before you cancel the old service. Ask the new provider what account information and transfer steps it needs, keep the current account active until the transfer is complete, and make sure the phone is compatible.

How do I choose the right amount of data?

Look at several recent bills or your phone’s usage history. Include hotspot use and travel, then choose a plan that leaves a reasonable margin. Read what the provider does when you reach the plan’s high-speed data allowance.
