Questions before you decide

What is a personal installment loan?

It is generally a closed-end loan: the lender provides a lump sum and you repay it in set installments over a stated period. Your offer can depend on your credit, income, debts, loan amount, term, and state rules.

What should I compare in two personal-loan offers?

Compare the APR, fees, amount you will actually receive, monthly payment, payment count, total repayment, and any prepayment or late-payment terms. Do not compare only the advertised rate or only the monthly payment.

Will checking a rate affect my credit?

It depends on the lender and stage of the application. Some providers use a soft inquiry to show a rate estimate and may use a hard inquiry later. Read the provider’s disclosure and ask before you submit information.

Does debt consolidation always save money?

No. It can simplify payments, but a longer repayment term, fees, or new spending can raise the total cost. Compare the new loan’s total repayment with your current payoff plan, and make sure you can make every required payment.
