Here are some interesting and amusing developments from the past week that aren’t exactly news, but might make you smile.
1. Man cited after paying bill with 2,500 pennies
Can you be arrested for paying your bills in pennies? In Utah, it happened to a man who paid a $25 medical bill that way. The charge? “Disorderly conduct.”
2. See (the real) Titanic for $60,000
You can see the movie Titanic on TV for free, but a visit to the real thing will require deep pockets and a deep dive into the chilly North Atlantic Sea. Not surprisingly, few folks are buying tickets from a luxury firm called Bluefish. “The firm took only eight people to the site between 2002 and 2006,” CNN reports.
3. Ohio woman, 100, has bank account dating to 1913
Talk about being a longtime customer. June Gregg opened an account at what’s now a Huntington National Bank branch before World War I. And it’s still there. “Gregg still has the little blue passbook from when the account was opened with an initial deposit of $6.11,” Yahoo! reports.
4. Colorado balloon boy parents say they’ll sell balloon
Crime doesn’t pay, but it can help charitable causes. The Colorado couple who lied about their son floating away in a balloon plan to auction off the craft to raise money for Japanese earthquake victims – because they aren’t allowed to profit from their crime.
5. Facebook party spins out of control
Here’s a helpful tech tip: When you throw a party, make sure you mark it “private” on your Facebook page. Otherwise, this happens: “A teenage girl in Germany who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control,” The Associated Press reported.
