Here are some interesting and amusing developments from the past week that aren’t exactly news but might make you smile.
1. California lawmakers lose pay until they pass balanced budget
Necessity, it’s often said, is the mother of invention. And the necessity of solving California’s debt crisis may have created something that will hopefully spread. “California lawmakers will forfeit their pay until they pass a balanced budget,” CNN reports. “California lawmakers have the highest salaries in the nation…$95,291 a year.”
2. NYC bagel store made famous by Seinfeld closing
The economy claims another high-profile victim. “The H&H Bagels store on Manhattan’s Upper West Side has been a city institution since 1972,” MSNBC reports. It was featured on TV shows such as Seinfeld and Friends.
3. Winning candy campaign disses American flag
If you want to win awards in Romania, insult America. A company called Kandia Dulce put the stars and stripes on its wrappers with the slogan, “Patriotism won’t feed you.” Reports USA Today: “That creative effort, from ad agency BV McCann Erickson, Bucharest, earned the top Grand Prix award in both the promo/activation and direct categories.”
4. Goddess fetches three times estimate as Indian-art demand rises
The recession isn’t affecting paintings of Indian goddesses. “A painting of a Hindu goddess sold for more than three times its estimate at a $4 million online auction,” Bloomberg reports. “Demand for Indian artworks is boosted by the country’s growing number of billionaires.”
5. I’ll marry you…when you get a job
In the category of “You needed a study for that?” comes this nugget of news: “Two websites, yourtango.com and Forbes Woman, recently polled 625 of their readers and found that 75 percent of them would not marry a man who was unemployed,” MSNBC reported. Gee – who knew?
