The Week in Review: Funny Money Stories

Here are some interesting and amusing developments from the past week that aren’t exactly news but might make you smile.

1. Coke’s secret formula gets closer to the public

The recipe for Coca-Cola is more closely guarded than that of a nuclear weapon – after all, Iran is building the bomb, but they have no idea how to make this 125-year-old soda. Now the recipe is being unlocked from a secret bank vault and put on display in Coke’s museum in Atlanta. “The permanent exhibit will feature the vault where the formula is housed as well as an interactive, multimedia attraction,” CNN reports. But you won’t get close enough to read it.

2. We wish to rent you a Merry Christmas

Santa Claus may bring the toys this year, but he’ll take them back next year. “Many parents are choosing to rent toys this holiday season instead of dishing out big bucks to buy the latest and greatest playthings,” MSNBC reports, citing two growing companies who offer just that: BabyPlays.com and Toygaroo.

3. After years of saving, shoppers treat themselves

More than a third of holiday shoppers are buying gifts for themselves – “36 percent plan to buy gifts for themselves this year, up from 29 percent last year,” USA Today reports. “Nearly a fourth of shoppers will spend $100 to $300 on themselves this year.”

4. Poppy Harlow crushes car with tank!

Hey, everyone’s gotta make a living: A family in Kasota, Minn., owns seven old combat tanks and charges tourists for rides. “For $500 a pop, people get the ride of their life,” CNN reports. Most common ride? Crushing a car.

5. Ford killing off the Econoline van

Besides yellow school buses, there probably isn’t a more American form of mass auto transportation than the Econoline van. But in 2013, after more than three decades, the last one will roll off the assembly line. “It’s not because of flagging sales,” USA Today reports. “Ford has already made 6 million.” The reason? A high-roof replacement called Transit “will get 25-percent better fuel economy and is far lighter.”
